Socialization Project
My mask represents how I've been socialized as a white teenage girl. On my mask there are two different sides. One side represents how society teaches teenage girls to look and act. Which teaches girls to hide there true self. and to make up a new identity thats not them. The other side that has no makeup represents how we are happier being ourselves.
Socialization Essay
“O my god.” I thought when I walked in to my first class in 6th grade. It was like there was something stuck in my throat. It felt like I missed a conversation about how everybody was going to look. It seemed I was the only one without makeup or adult looking clothing on. As e.e. cummings said “It takes courage to grow up and be who you really are”. Ever since that first day of school I have tried to live by that quote. These days girls are not accepted if they do not conform to how society wants them to act and look. In this essay I will give you the statistics of why girls are taught or almost forced to act, dress and look like someone they are not, and why they hide their true self to fit in. I have been negatively socialized by society as a young teenage girl to believe I have to look and act a certain way to be acceptable in this world.
According to http://www.businessdictionary.com socialization is the process by “which individuals acquire the knowledge, language, social skills, and value to conform to the norms and roles required for integration into a group or community. It is a combination of both self-imposed (because the individual wants to conform) and externally-imposed rules, and the expectations of the others. In an organizational setting, socialization refers to the process through which a new employee 'learns the ropes,' by becoming sensitive to the formal and informal power structure and the explicit and implicit rules of behavior. I was taught socialization is broken up into six stages. These stages are the beginning, first socialization, cultural and institutional socialization, enforcements, results, and direction for change which all put together are how we are socialized and how we break the system.
Television affects the life of being a young woman, and young girls are negatively encouraged to be a certain way. According to (livestrong.com), children ages 2 to 5 watch television for more than 32 hours a week. Kids ages 6 to 8 spent 28 hours per week in front of the television . I was raised without any channels on my television. My family had to rent movies, and that was not very often. Unlike most children I was not introduced to the television at an early age. What is it that television is teaching girls? When I was younger I sometimes wanted to be just like the characters. By then I was socially developed enough to know to be myself, and not change just because I thought it would be cool . If I saw the movie “Mean Girls” at age 6, I probably wouldn't be the same person I am today. I would only make the connection that if I was mean I would be popular. Television often teaches children to think popularity is all school is about. So what is this doing to our younger generation? According to (livestrong.com) television diverts your child from activities such as playing and connecting with family and friends. I believe that television is teaching kids to think they have to act a certain way and be popular to have friends. They are not finding out what they are actually good at like soccer, dance, baseball etc. Television is lowering the self esteem and motivation level of children, it sucks us into a world we think would be much better than our own, instead of liking the life we are in. I have talked to several 4-8 year olds and the majority of them would rather stay at home and watch television then go camping during the weekend. Personally I would much rather play outside then watch television , and I hope parents would feel the same way.
Social media and magazines have affected my perspective on how women should look and act. Social media has played a great role in my generation by lowering our confidence and telling us that if we are not a certain shape or size that we have to diet to become that image. According to ANAD, 58% of women feel pressure to be a certain weight, and 83% are on a diet for weight loss, 44% were of a normal weight. Even if women or teenage girls are skinny they still feel a need to diet so they can be skinnier. I have eaten pretty healthy ever since I was born. Although I am fairly skinny I still feel self conscious about my body. This is mostly after looking at a magazine or looking for clothing. Most clothing options these days seem to be either for size 20 or size 0 but never in-between. In the song “all about the bass” the lyrics say “My momma she told me don’t worry bout your size” I think this song is one of the best songs young girls could follow. When I was 10 I was only allowed to wear makeup in dance recitals. These days most girls, according to (http://www.independent.co.uk/ .) 63% of girls the age of 8-13 use lipstick and 44% wear eye shadow or eyeliner to make them look older. I personally can no longer tell the difference between an 8 year old or 14 year old girl because of extensive use of makeup. In my opinion girls wear makeup to hide themselves. The media is telling young girls to hide themselves under make up and provocative clothing, and telling them if they do these thing they will be popular and all the guys will like them. In most countries children are encouraged to stay youthful for a lot longer than American culture does. America tries to make kids grow up fast, and the provocative clothing and extensive use of makeup has made young girls think that they are older and more mature than they are. In my opinion that is why there is so much teenage pregnancy in this generation. Girls should be encouraged to act and look their age instead of being forced to grow up faster.
Teenage girls are negatively influenced in school. My experience is that peers expect you conform a certain way. If I were to walk in to school with black shaggy hair and heavy, dark makeup, I would be stereotyped goth and would be an outcasted. If I were to come to school with a Prada bag and designer clothing I would be considered popular. I find the people who dress “weirdly” are the most interesting to be around. The people that wear all the top brands are shallow and have nothing interesting to talk about. Teens that don't spend all their money buying the expensive brands have more money to spend with their friends. I value fun and good times with friends above expensive stuff that I would be afraid to break or get dirty. According to (http://nobullying.com/bullying-statistics-2014/) Nine out of 10 LGBT youth report being verbally bullied because they look or act different. In the song “Whos laughing now?” by Jessie J. she basically says that kids teased her about how she looked. Then she states that she became famous and they're still living their boring lives. I think this is because people that criticize other people put more effort in the criticizing than in developing their character. I also think that people criticize when they don't feel good about themselves, because the media’s message breaks them down.
I have grown and changed since my first day of 6th grade, and I still follow the quote by e.e. cummings. “It takes courage to grow up and be who you really are”. I think every day, no matter how hard it is or what people think of me, I have been nothing but my self. That first day when I felt there was something stuck in my throat, and I missed an important conversation; has made me that much stronger. I fight everyday to not be negatively socialized as a young teenager and I encourage every girl to show their true inner self, no matter how quirky and weird. People who do show their true self are happy and never feel like they are carrying a box of lies. I hope the negative socialization will someday be broken.

Project Reflection
Socialization is the process by which individuals acquire the knowledge, language, social skills, and value to conform to the norms and roles required for integration into a group or community. It has affected me negatively by not allowing or teaching me to be myself. Society has prescher me to follow these norms.
In this project we had to write an essay about either race, gender, ethnicity, or class. We then had to right a 800 word essay TEA format about that topic we choose. In this project we had 3 drafts and our final draft. After we were finished with our essay we had to make a mask that showed how the topic of the essay affected you as an individual.
In class our process to write our essay was to write out topic sentences then based off of those we wrought our evidence and our conclusions.
